Two days after Christmas, 1948, in a city that could be New York, a young woman prepares to get a life-altering haircut. Add to the mix Misha, an angel from the Old Country whose specialty is New Year's Eve. Ultimately, "The Haircut" is a story that weaves whimsy with romance, plus more serious themes, as it underscores the timelessness and hope of the season in which it's set.

Plot/Storyline: 4 1/2 StarsThis book was billed as a gNew Yearfs Tale,h but it was very much in the spirit of Christmas. It was a romantic fairy tale, complete with a princess, a disheveled prince, evil family members, and even a perverted fiance to make it more modern. Yes, the fiance was sexually perverted; there was also a little sex, though not graphic or detailed, and a rather violent beating, so this was definitely an adult fairy tale.
The story was set in the 1940s, a perfect time period for the plot, which wouldnft have worked in a more modern time. This setting also gave the story a feeling of innocence, even in light of the perversion and abuse. Although it had a eChristmasyf feel, I think the story had some pretty original messages for a holiday tale.
While this was a short novel, I think it could definitely have been shortened to a novella without losing any of the flow or meaning. It dragged in a few places, such as the scene where she was getting the haircut. Yes, the haircut was important to the story, but it was really what the haircut stood for, not the act itself.
I especially enjoyed the idea of Misha, the New Yearfs version of Santa. My favorite part was Tashafs telling of the young, homeless boyfs meeting with Misha. I also enjoyed the ending, and the way some revelations made the story come full circle.
Characters: 5 Stars
Tasha was wonderfully depicted as a young, innocent princess. She stayed in character throughout the story and had plenty of depth to evoke empathy in the reader.
Mike was my favorite character. I really felt sorry for him when he was concerned about having feelings for someone other than his deceased wife. Kind, gentle, and nervous himself, he was the perfect match for Tasha.
Writing Style: 4 1/2 Stars
The eloquent writing style had a truly mellow feel to it that was perfect for this book. The best descriptions were in the opening scene; after that, they were pretty sparse, at least in any meaningful way. I would have enjoyed more time period descriptive scenes. There were one or two instance of viewpoint problems, but it was not prevalent. The dialogue was well done. The Tasha and her family speak a little oddly at times, but I chalked that up to English being their second language.
Editing: 3 3/4 Stars
Taking the length of the novel into account, there were quite a few errors. Punctuation was probably the biggest issue, especially when quotation marks were left out when needed, or added when not.

This book was given to me by my sister, who has yet to read it, and was the first book I read. I didn't know how I was going to like reading books on the because I love my paperbacks so much, especially since I get them at a used book store. This book was a wonderfully sweet and romantic story; I absolutely loved it. It's definitely a keeper and because it's not too long, it can be read in an afternoon. It's the kind of story you read on a rainy day, all comfy in your lounge chair wrapped in a nice warm blanket with your favorite cup of cocoa. I know when I read it again, I will find things I missed the first time. Know that I will read it again! Thanks so much for such a lovely book.
This was a sweet and charming adult fairy tale, not the usual type of book for me to read. Surprisingly, I enjoyed it very much. The characters were well-developed for a short novel, and Misha, the angel, provided a message for us all to live by. I think that "thorns to feathers" may always remain in my mind. Although I kept thinking of this book as a romantic fairy tale, it made me smile, it made me sad at times, and it took my mind away to a place I enjoyed. I was able to get lost in it. Overall, it was a heartwarming love story with a "happily ever after" ending. If not for various formatting issues and grammatical/missing word errors, I would have given it five stars. I read the author's other book, New Coastal Times, which was very good as well and did earn a five star rating from me. I hope she writes more books soon, and I will definitely read them. In my opinion, Donna Callea is one of the best independent authors.
The Haircut, a New Year's Tale is a refreshing good story with a very good message by Donna Callea
I'm an addicted reader of indie author's . I am trying to read outside my usual mystery/crime genre and I am glad I gave Donna Callea's story a try. Her book was well thought out as were each of her characters. Ms.Callea did a great job getting all her characters and telling a very good story into such a short story. Some of the thought's were repeated several times about the haircut and the barber but it didn't inhibit me from enjoying this story at all. I'd certainly like to have the barber, his Mom and the princess as my friend's, they have good common sense, kindness and are very understanding lovable people.
I am a believer in "thorns to feathers" and love Misha !!

I was so pleasantly surprised with this book. I received a for a Christmas gift. Yesterday was the first opportunity that I had to get started with it. I was initially disappointed that the two books I knew I wanted were not available until after the first of the year. So, I started casting around for my very first book. This was it, and I don't think I could have made a better selection.
This is a New Year's story that for me was much in the spirit of "It's a Wonderful Life" or "Miracle on 34th Street." It could so easily have been trite, but I thought the author did a wonderful job of holding well above that level.
My timing was also good since I read this during the week before New Year's. It crystalized in my mind the attitude I want to carry into 2010 and onward, but I think it brings value whenever you might read it.
Well done, Donna Callea. I will look for future offerings.
